Raku Japanese, Concorde Shah Alam

When Japanese food comes to mind, one place that doesn’t immediately come to mind is dining in a hotel. Raku Japanese is located in a nook in the majestic Concorde Hotel in Shah Alam. The interior boasted wooden Japanese decor and splendid blue curtains.

Each table had a stalk of cherry blossoms that gave a really relaxing feel to the restaurant. Seating is quite limited but that would come in handy if you would want a quiet dinner.

Appetizer: Sashimi Take (RM58). This platter came on a chilled plate. It’s great for sharing because of the variety you can get.

Main (Chef’s Speciality): Soft Shell Crab Karaage, (RM23). This dish is best eaten while hot, and we did exactly that so we could enjoy the crispy goodness of the soft shell crab. It came with a slight tinge of spiciness though, but went away as soon as the creamy mayo joined the mix.

Main (Set): Kijidon, (RM26). The chicken teriyaki on rice were of cutlets of chicken thigh and covered in teriyaki sauce. Served with a bowl of miso soup and fruit salad. Chicken to rice ratio was satisfactory.

Main (Chef’s Speciality): New Style Tuna Tataki (RM58). I personally love this coral lettuce wrapped in tuna slices. The pieces of lettuce was a great refresher from the fish dishes. Chef Eddy is holding up the tuna tataki.

Main (Chef’s Speciality): Chicken Yakitori. This dish is only available upon request for the moment. We were given skewers of chicken fillet, breast, thigh, and chicken skin. The skewers of meat are marinated with miso paste and then char-grilled to smoky perfection. Surprisingly, the chicken breast skewers were really juicy!

Dessert: Tempura Ice-Cream (RM12). This unique dessert is great to complete the meal while keeping to the theme. The soft vanilla ice-cream is rolled in a thin slice of mocha cake and then fried with tempura batter. We did love smudging each bite with the chocolate and strawberry sauce that came with it.

We also got to meet the friendly and completely chill Chef Eddy who was really nice to join in our banter towards the end of the meal. It’s really nice to get to thank the chef who created such delightful Japanese fare.
